Position Summary:

The Facilities Maintenance Assistant is responsible for providing general maintenance to Catholic Charities West Michigan (CCWM) locations and grounds. This position will assist the Facilities Maintenance Coordinator in performing routine maintenance, purchasing supplies for projects, and other housekeeping jobs necessary to keep the facilities safe and clean.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine repairs and other housekeeping tasks necessary to keep each facility clean and safe.
  • Participate in maintaining outside grounds such as snow removal and ice removal as necessary.
  • Provides prompt and courteous customer service to CCWM participants, employees, and suppliers.
  • Performs preventative maintenance duties including visual inspections, repairs, cleaning, testing, and diagnostic work of equipment and systems.
  • Documents all equipment maintenance and repairs, maintains work order records, work logs and reports.
  • Performs minor electrical maintenance to include but not be limited to replacement or repair of fixtures (e.g. wall switches and outlets, incandescent and fluorescent bulbs and tubes, ballast, sockets, fuses, minor appliances, cords, etc.) using appropriate hand, power and specialty tools.
  • Re configures, installs, positions, and re-mounts modular offices and space (e.g. furniture, wall panels, work surfaces, storage bins, lighting, file cabinets, etc.) to accommodate user needs and maximize office space using various hand, power and specialty tools, dollies and hand trucks.
  • Repairs building components such as doors, windows, walls, flooring, appliances, fixtures, etc. as required.
  • Paints interior and exterior walls.
  • Perform floor care functions and replenish and fill all supplies including paper towel, toilet paper and soap dispensers as needed.
  • Know how to read Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Know correct methods of cleaning spills and the procedure for reacting to chemical exposure.
  • Comply with the procedures for handling, missing, labeling, and disposal of all chemicals used in performing job functions.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Employment Qualifications:


High School diploma or General Education Development (GED) preferred.


One (1) to three (3) years of prior experience in building maintenance and/or janitorial skills is required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Human relations and communications skills are needed to maintain positive working relations with CCWM customers, employees, volunteers, visitors, outside vendors, suppliers, and contractors.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Skills in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools including, but not limited to, the design, use, repair process, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of a variety of building maintenance procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to push minimum 50 pounds (industrial tools and equipment); ability to lift minimum 50 pounds (tools and supplies).
  • Ability to climb ladder and step ladder.
  • Bending at the waist, sitting, kneeling, laying horizontally, climbing, walking, etc., as job may require.
  • Must have reliable personal transportation (vehicle), as travel is required to meet Agency needs.
  • Must have current and valid driver’s license and car insurance.
